After 27 years of dedicated service with Excel Constructors, Charles Michael ‘Tod’ Land retires. When Excel opened its doors in 1991, Tod Land was the new company’s first hire. From that point forward under Tod’s supervision and leadership, many of Excel’s largest and most notable projects were constructed. These include the St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church and School, First Baptist Church of Raytown Recreation Outreach Center, FedEx Ground Hub Expansion, New Chelsea Elementary, Excelsior Springs Middle School among many others. Included in his accomplishments is the construction of the project farthest from our Overland Park office, a data center in West Jordan, Utah for Verizon Wireless. Tod’s projects received several industry awards for producing quality projects, including the Associated Builders and Contractors’ Excellence in Construction Presidents Award for the Recreation Outreach Center (ROC) in Raytown.
“The immense pride in each of his jobs never went unnoticed by the project’s owners, design team, subcontractors and craftsmen. Tod’s work ethic is second to none. Tod is and will continue to be a mentor to many in our industry,” were of some of Tod’s strengths that Mike Johnson, Excel’s president, shared at the reception honoring Tod. Fittingly the reception was held at one of Tod’s premier projects, St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church. Parish Administrator Chris Arth said, “Tod always went the extra mile and bent over backwards to meet the parish and educational visions of our buildings.”
Humbled by the outpouring of accolades and well wishes, Tod reminded the crowd that he only did one thing – he got up each morning and went to work. And when he got there he did the best job he could each and every day. He said it took the entire team working together to be successful. He thanked his family and friends in attendance for sharing this special event with him. Tod recognized his wife, Marlene, for her continuous support over these many years noting the long workdays and weekends on the job site; and especially during the times he was on the road.
Tod leaves a legacy that will continue to be part of the foundation of Excel’s success. We congratulate Tod on a well-earned retirement, and continued happiness to Tod and Marlene as they begin this next chapter of their lives.
