Description
The accountant provides financial information to management by researching and analyzing accounting data; preparing reports. The accountant monitors compliance of subcontracts by collecting and analyzing required documentation. The position assists the Chief Financial Officer with information system tasks.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintains subsidiary accounts by verifying, allocating, and posting transactions.
- Balances subsidiary accounts by reconciling entries.
- Balances general ledger by preparing a trial balance; reconciling entries.
- Prepares financial reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing account information and trends.
- Ensures contract compliance before releasing payment to subcontractors. This includes analysis of lien waivers, certificates of insurance, change orders and affidavit review. Approves the release of payment to subcontractors.
- Communicates (both in verbal and written form) with vendors, accountants and banking contacts.
- Establishes and maintains interpersonal relationships by communicating with peers, supervisors and persons outside of the organization.
- Remits payroll taxes, sales taxes, use taxes, and income taxes.
- Ensures that receivables are collected promptly and issues financial statements.
- Conducts a monthly reconciliation of every bank accounts.
- Conducts periodic reconciliations of all accounts to ensure their accuracy.
- Maintains historical records by filing documents.
- Calculates variances from the budget and reports significant issues to management.
- Assembles information for external auditors for the annual audit and assists accountants on tax return preparation.
- Generates 1099’s for vendors.
- Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying requirements; enforcing adherence to requirements; filing reports; advising management on needed actions.
- Creates financial statements and related financial reports.
- Accounts for fixed assets.
- Prepares asset, liability, and capital account entries by compiling and analyzing account information.
- Substantiates financial transactions by auditing documents.
- Maintains accounting controls by preparing and recommending policies and procedures.
- Reconciles financial discrepancies by collecting and analyzing account information.
- Secures financial information by completing data base backups.
- Maintains financial security by following internal controls.
- Complies with federal, state, and local financial legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation, enforcing adherence to requirements, and advising management on needed actions.
- Protects operations by keeping financial information confidential.
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
- Analyzes and recovers system when a software or hardware malfunction occurs.
- Monitors security procedures including firewall and spam & virus software.
- Performs back-up, recovery and systems monitoring.
- Troubleshoots software and hardware to maintain performance and system throughout.
- Monitors hardware and software on LAN/WAN systems.
- Monitors jobs using a computer terminal or personal computer (PC).
- Assists team members resolve problems with computer hardware and software.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills
Education and/or Experience: Bachelor’s degree in accounting as well as knowledge of computer information systems.
Accounting Skills: Corporate Finance, Information Systems, Reporting, Deadline-Oriented, Reporting Research Results, SFAS Rules, GAAP, Confidentiality, Time Management, Data Entry Management
Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or members of the business community. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups and/or boards of directors.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
Other Skills and Abilities: Must be proficient in operating a computer, and other office equipment. Must possess a working knowledge of Microsoft Office software and have the ability to learn new software programs. Detail oriented, highly motivated, well-organized and problem solving skills are prime skills necessary for successful achievement in this position.
Reasoning Abilities: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
